The 2015 Model of Fiat 500 Turbo- A Tamed Tasmanian Devil

The subcompacts are endeared by Canadian locals. A look across and you find myriads of these four wheelers, swarming the car parks and driveways. No wonder when Chrysler introduced Fiat 500 to the Canadian shores, they were warmly welcomed.

They were indeed being Driven by the Passion of locals.

But the urban subcompacts did not completely satiate us; we wanted a small urban drive packed with a punch—a Tamed Tasmanian Devil. Fiat truly obliged and here we are standing with a 2015 model of Fiat 500 Turbo in front of us; considered to be a more maniac version of traditional Fiat 500 but a tamer version of the devouring Abarth. It promises a roaring engine but also a comfortable ride for daily commutes. Let’s take a look at how far it delivers on these promises.

Fiat 500 Turbo

Fiat 500 Turbo - The exterior

Unfazed and charming, the 2015 model of Fiat 500 Turbo stands upright but puffed. Remember Fat Albert? Yeah exactly like that!

Round lights, extended front hood (let’s do not disclose the reason for it as of now) and a rear spoiler gives it a traditional Italian look. It comes with green and red Italian bodied strips as well as in a Canadian Maple Leaf, providing a customized patriotic flavor. However, these designs are completely optional and depends if the customer wants them or not.

Let’s Open the Hood!

We open the hood and this is wherein the secret of the extended front hood lies—a traditional 1.4 liter MultiAir in-line four-cylinder engine but exclusively equipped with a turbo charger. This makes the engine roaring at a 135 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque; admittedly not much but considering the model weighs 1,168 kg—it does add punch to the previous introvert versions of Fiat 500. With a much more powerful engine than its predecessors, bar Fiat Abarth, the Turbo series is equipped with heavy-duty mechanical components like larger half shifts, meaty exhaust, and larger front rotors to compensate for the increased torque.

Let’s Explore it from the Inside

Exiting and entering the car does not seem a problem but once you are seated, a headroom of just 37.6 inches may pose a challenge for you especially if you are 6 feet or taller. However elevated seating does seem to have an advantage as it increases front visibility. The interior, on the whole, looks a bit sporty with a black interior and white panel. However, you can also opt for Rosso Red leather seats if you want to add to the already stylistic interior.

Okay, let us look for the window switches.

Well you may be a bit disappointed if you are not fond of control overhauls, as the window switches are placed in the centre console on the dash rather than on door panels. Moreover, there are no door locking buttons and you’ll have to maneuver with door handles to lock your door.

The 2015 model of Fiat 500 Turbo also does not seem to offer too much room for the rear seat passengers, with legroom of just 31.7 inches and a cargo space of 9.5 ft3. Definitely not ideal if you want to carry gears and have teens to accompany you on the journey.

Let’s Start the Ignition

The Engine Roar

In goes the key and there sounds the hungry engine. Those who have driven the base Fiat 500s will definitely notice the impressive engine roar, however the model is not quite as discordant as Fiat Abarth and neither as powerful.

Changing the Gears

You look at the transmission and you have a manual five-speed transmission. However if you can bulk up a bit more cash, there is also an option of AISIN 6-speed automatic transmission.

Speeding it Up

Turning on the acceleration and the car hits 100 km/h within eight seconds, which sounds impressive for an urban wheeler, definitely attributable to its turbo charged engine.

Suspension and Handling

Suspension seems to have been redesigned to give the model sharper handling characteristics, making the ride appear smooth and calmer while inspiring confidence in the driver. However too many sharp turns and you notice your partner being not too comfortable in the front bucket seat with too much of side bolstering. A family long drive and the comfort level increases accordingly. Those road bumps, and you realize why we warned off about the small headroom. But then every Fiat 500 is like that.

Put the Brakes On!

The brake seems to work absolutely fine, as the large front rotors ensure that the driver remains in control even at high speed.

Shoulder Check

On the turn, trying to look behind and you observe a significant rear view blind spot, with the line of sight being obstructed by headrests. However a little adjustments with the mirrors and you’ll soon find your fears being eased.

The Fuel Consumption

While driving through the streets of the Edmonton, we seem to have used up 2 gallons of fuel while travelling a total distance of 55.7 miles that roughly gives it a MPG of 28. Logically on a highway, the fuel efficiency is bound to be better.

Let’s Park It

Known for its small size, you won’t find any difficulties while trying to make a space in a crowded car park—atleast we did not.

Where Do We Stand On This One?

The 2015 model of Fiat 500 Turbo yields an improved subcompact driving and performance experience on base Fiat 500s—so definitely a more maniac version.

The 2015 model of Fiat 500 did appear wild at times but not as devouring as Fiat Abarth — so definitely a tamed Tasmanian Devil.

The 2015 model is ideal for a couple or single travel on wheels journey, however it’s too compact interior may not be the perfect family solution.

It combines vintage Italian with modernism.

And it gives enough reason for you to test drive it yourself.
